Long before the main storyline, Nishida Hyōei was a practitioner of the Hiten Mitsurugi-ryū under his master, Hiko Seijūrō XII. He failed to become the style successor after failing to execute the Amakakeru Ryu no Hirameki properly against his master's Kuzu Ryu Sen, which resulted in him being knocked into a waterfall and left near death. He later survived and reunited with his sister and her family, who were members of a hidden Christian cult. He adopted the Amakusa siblings after their parents were murdered for being affiliated with the Christian faith, where they fled to Europe and Hyōei deciding to pass on his swordsmanship skills to Shōgo per the boy's pleas.

For seveal years, Hyoei wished for his nephew to liberate the oppressed Christians of Japan; however, after learning of the extreme methods which Shōgo intended to pursue in order to materialize this dream, Hyōei reprimanded his nephew and attempted to stop him. However, Shōgo easily defeated his uncle and master, leaving him in a state of blindness.

Thereafter, Hyōei contacted Hiko Seijūrō XIII with news of his whereabouts, in order to have Kenshin meet with him. He pleaded with Kenshin to stop Shōgo's path of destruction, before passing away right in front of him.
